Festival Schedule

From an insightful glimpse into politics to an inspiring profile of our leading author, it's one continuous learning spree. And it starts with a series of interactive Webinars featuring authors whose new or revised books are being published in 2012.

Anytime/Anywhere Webinars! Join the authors live,
watch a recording later when it's convenient, or both.

DAY ONE JULY 16: WEBINARS

The ins and outs of political power…

Covering and Leading Political Campaigns  —  9:00am - 10:00am (PDT)

Seasoned journalist and outsider Belva Davis (Never in my Wildest Dreams) shares her perspective on political campaigns with insider Christine Pelosi (Campaign Boot Camp 2.0) an activist and delegate for the Democratic Party. Weigh in with your own view, inside or out.

Takeaway – Learn how to be a more active citizen in this big election year.

…and the ups and downs

Forging New Future Constructs  —  1:00pm - 2:00pm (PDT)

Are political movements formed from the bottom up or the top down and how will recent movements like the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street affect this pivotal election year? Chuck Collins (99 to 1), a senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies tries to answer these questions and more, aided by Sarah van Gelder (This Changes Everything, Editor), Executive Director of Yes! Magazine and Fran Korten (This Changs Everything, Advocate), publisher of Yes!.

Takeaway – Learn how to interpret the strength of a grass-roots movement and how it affects your vote.

DAY TWO JULY 17: WEBINARS

What leaders need to do…

Innovating Leadership for the Future  —  9:00am - 10:00am (PDT)

Bob Johansen (Leaders Make the Future) came up with a list of demanding skills for effective leaders, including an ability to anticipate the future. Soren Kaplan (Leapfrogging) put only one critical skill on his list – the ability to transform the unexpected into the advantage. Control versus flexibility. Breadth versus focus. All of it, business as un-usual.

Takeaway – Learn ten new skills for future leadership and how to transform surprise into a strength.

…and how they need to do it

Growth Through Mindfulness  —  1:00pm - 2:00pm (PDT)

One is a serious scholar, who trusts in thought and reflection. The other is a dynamic workshop leader who trusts in action and application. Both are students of Buddhism. Submit your leadership and business dilemmas and see what Franz Metcalf (Being Buddha at Work) and B.J. Gallagher ( Being Buddha at Work, A Peacock in the Land of Penguins) think is the most enlightened approach.

Takeaway – Learn simple principles to make you more productive and content in your workplace.

DAY THREE JULY 18: WEBINARS

Connecting with ourselves…

Purpose in All Aspects of Life  —  9:00am - 10:00am (PDT)

Three thought leaders, all of whom think a sense of Purpose is the key to transformation. But what to do with that purpose? To Richard Leider and David Shapiro, co-writers of Repacking Your Bags, it transforms the individual life. To John Izzo (Stepping Up) it's a public duty to use personal purpose for public good. When the philosophical and the pragmatic meet, can the provocative be far behind?

Takeaway – Learn how to find your main purpose in life and decide where to take your stand for a better world.

…and connecting with others

Managing Yourself and Others  —  1:00pm - 2:00pm (PDT)

You're over-busy, over-scheduled, and you're not seeing enough of family and friends. Or you're not interacting successfully with co-workers and you're not sure why. To Laura Stack (What To Do When There's Too Much To Do) the solution is to identify what's essential and then organize your tasks better. To Devora Zack (Managing for People Who Hate Managing) the solution is to identify your personal style and then organize your behaviors. These women have answers. And they await your questions.

Takeaway – Learn how to create a sustainable and enjoyable workplace by managing others and yourself with more care.

Jeevan Sivasubramaniam
Managing Director, Editorial

Jeevan is Berrett-Koehler Publishers' Managing Director for Editorial (though he prefers Chief Flunkey in more formal situations). Jeevan is responsible for the administration of the editorial department as well as inter-departmental, reviewer community, and author communications and relationships as well as the company newsletter, the BK Communiqué. He remains confused as to why his wife never took his last name.

DAY FOUR JULY 19: TWO SPECIAL EVENTS

Our First-Ever Open-to-the-Public SHAREHOLDERS MEETING 1:00-4:15pm

It's not just an event. It's the event of the year, every year. Learn what's new at BK Publishers and in the industry in general, including advances in e-books, business challenges and business opportunities. Watch it online and later submit your questions and comments for feedback.

The BK Birthday, Anniversary, Come-As-You-Are, CELEBRATION 4:30-8:30 pm

Join our party at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco without ever leaving your home and help us honor our 10 bestselling authors, together for the first time in one place. Each will speak about their vision for creating a world that works for all and together we'll explore how they influenced the last twenty years and how they may influence the next twenty years.

DAY FIVE JULY 20: CLOSING THOUGHTS

COMMUNITY DIALOGUE  —  8:30am - 5:00pm (PDT)

It's our community – the BK community – and you're part of it. Receive a specially prepared multi-media report on this in-person event, where thought leaders and other guests try to answer the big questions about our role as publishers and change advocates. How can we increase our capacity to create a world that works for all? What new connections can we form? How can technology aid in creating a workable world? Then contribute your own sought-after thoughts on the BK community site.

Our Brave New World: A World That Works for All?  —  9:00am - 10:00am (PDT)

Reflections from Margaret Wheatley

A webinar profile and interview of esteemed BK author Margaret Wheatley, the only author whose work spans all agendas of the BK mission (individual, organizational, and societal change). With author/colleague Juanita Brown, Margaret will follow the progression of her global community work through her seven books for BK, from the bestseller that helped launch the company, to her newest release this coming September.
